Black Beauty Standards

Cari Corbet-Owen
Categories: Beauty

The black is beautiful movement has gone a long way towards reminding us that black beauty standards are as worthy of being respected and loved as any other skin color. And here’s a deep Truth (and by deep Truth I mean a truth that holds true for all cultures, for all people through all periods of time, in other words it doesn’t change according to some or other societal whim) – we are all beautiful Sacred Beings regardless of our body size or shape or it’s exterior color. Now those beauty standards are ones I can buy into!

Black beauty standards in rural Africa

I grew up, a White small country girl, in apartheid South Africa – a place where by far the majority of the population is Black. One vacation I came home from boarding school to be greated by Violet who wrapped me in her big black arms, and chortled with delight, “Utyebile kakulu ngoku!” In English she was telling me that I was very fat now. I was devastated – after all, I had gained weight but I desperately wanted to be thin. It would take me years to realize that Violet was complimenting me – her black beauty standards were very different to mine.

Part of the beauty standards in Violet’s rural Xhosa culture of the 1970’s when she passed this comment, is that ‘fat is beautiful.’ To be large in her culture was considered desirable and beautiful. It meant: you were healthy, you didn’t have AIDS. It meant you were fertile, sexy and womanly enough to attract a good husband – one who is wealthy enough to provide well. It meant you were wealthy enough to eat well.

The media and black beauty standards

What I remember most about Violet (and the other Black women who I came into daily contact with) was that they never questioned that black is beautiful – they weren’t immersed in a mainstream Western media that seems to rank skin colors and body sizes as supposedly more valued and worthy the whiter and skinnier you are.

How can any one skin color, or one body size or shape determine a person’s worth? Why would our great Creator create any one race or culture to be more Sacred than another? That’s all just nonsensical beauty standards made up by misguided humans.

Violet was my black beauty standard

I can still clearly see Violet’s ebony skin – it had a glow to it that was almost iridescent. And when she smiled (which was often) she had this row of startling white teeth all without the latest teeth whiteners. They say beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder – I loved Violet’s blackness. White wouldn’t have suited her. I loved the way she walked, tall and proud. She could balance a bucket of water on her head and walk as gracefully as a dancer.

And she made me laugh – like the one time she came across me sun-tanning and teased me about how I liked black so much that I was trying to get the sun to help me. And when I started perming my hair and she asked me why I wanted curly hair like hers.

Here’s what I think is so sensible about rural Black African women. Firstly, they don’t have scales they hop on and off of and that determine their mood for the day. They don’t swarm to shops bursting at the seams with the latest one-0-size-fits-all fashions. They don’t have mirrors that lie telling they are fat and ugly. They don’t spend hours on magazines and tv that continually bombards them with the message that only a certain shape of thin is beautiful. Their beauty standards are far more realistic.

Beauty standards can determine our stress levels

Instead they live in tune with the rhythms of the seasons and their bodies. Violet didn’t have the ongoing emotional stress of living in a large body which was continually insulted, stigmatized, hated or rejected either by themselves or others. This means her parasympathetic nervous system wasn’t constantly releasing stress chemicals (like noradrenaline, adrenaline and cortisol) into their bloodstream which would raise their health risks.

And interestingly enough, the Royal College of Physicians official medical report of 1983 found that rural Black South African women might well have a high prevalence of obesity but that it comes without the apparently inevitable poor morbidity and mortality. Makes you think about the value of living in sync with natural rhythms, rather than stressing about being skinny – doesn’t it?

Because they are immersed in their big is beautiful black beauty standards, they feel good living in their bodies. They’re thus continually flooding their biolological system with life-supporting molecules of emotion (like endorphics) that enhance their immune systems, and enhance their health.

Do you want to get off that treadmill of creating stress hormones about your body? You’ll find much more about this by following some of the links below.

Beauty Guide

Klint Draper
Categories: Beauty

Some women are classic beauties – or look like they are. Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Onassis had a way of keeping everyone’s eyes on them by exuding an attitude of self-confidence. That’s the first sign of a classic beauty.

A classic beauty wears timeless clothes, but is savvy enough to update with smart accessories. Anyone can wear a little black dress. Audrey Hepburn stood out in hers by adding a colorful scarf. A good beauty guide is to keep make-up to a minimum. A little foundation and lip gloss call attention to the face, not the make-up. A classic woman has hair with shine and a basic cut. She is not someone who preens for hours. In addition, her hair color is natural-looking.

A beautiful woman dresses appropriately. A pretty dress for the evening. Well-fitting jeans to the mall on weekends. She wears underwear, but the specifics stay between her and her closet. A lovely woman wouldn’t reveal her undies any more than she would reveal a secret.

Classic women show their intelligence. They are a pleasure and a challenge to be around. Even if their beauty is flawed, it goes unnoticed because they invariably have something interesting to say. A true beauty guide starts in the mind.

Classic beauties strive for a nice body, but it’s never an obsession. The pencil-thin Hollywood look is not for them. And no classic beauty would be caught with breast implants. She has too much pride in herself to adhere to someone else’s standards. She has her own, unique beauty guide. If something needs fixing, she fixes it and forgets about it.

There is one special secret to beauty that works for every woman. Less is more. No one looks good with heaps of make-up hiding the face beneath.

For healthy-looking skin, exfoliate regularly for a natural, healthy glow. Moisturizing that fresh skin twice a day will keep it soft and dewy. Before leaving the house, add a bit of peach or pink blush and blend it well for a natural look.

A dab of neutral color, such as brown, can make eyes sparkle. It is best to stay over from bright blues or greens. No one looks good with those colors on their face. A thin eyeliner can bring out the eyes. A heavy liner makes the wearer look tired.

Very few women can carry off dark lipstick. A pink or coral shade looks natural and adds a more youthful appearance.

A classic beauty remembers the basics. Hair and body are freshly washed. Nails are trimmed and clean. Clothes are laundered. The grunge look is not beautiful.

A lifestyle of healthy food and moderate exercise can do more for a woman’s looks than the most expensive make-up in the world.

Keep in mind that character shines through. A smile lights up a face and makes people want to move closer. It’s an instant people-magnet. Have a positive attitude. Anyone can criticize. A beautiful woman knows how to compliment.

With the right attitude, anyone can be beautiful. It’s how we were born.

Visible Beauty on the Inside and Outside

Jill Brennan
Categories: Beauty

Beautiful is beautiful! There’s no other way to put it. You can say that beauty and the desire for it is universal and intrinsic. Everyone wants to be beautiful and ever since the dawn of time (or whenever capitalism began), business men and marketers have all used that want to get ahead in the game, making millions if not billions along the way. It’s a billion dollar business and I think everyone knows and agrees with this.

Looking at all the beautiful people you’re seeing on movies and television right now, we all want to be them. Well, probably not all of them as there are the occasional hiccups that you see on screen that arguably might not deserve to be there for one reason or another. But the point is, this is a marketing ploy yet again. It sends the message that being beautiful equals being popular, loved, admired and universally liked for lack of a better term.

Sure, it may not be an absolute rule of law but like it or not, that is how people see it and it’s been like that forever. It’s a symbiotic relationship that the beautiful people on screen have with the businessmen, infomercials and tele-marketers promoting their beauty products. Like I said, this is a selling point directed towards the masses, the regular people. It aims to tell us ‘Hey look at us, we’re living the life. You want to be like us? Then pay attention because these are the products you need to buy so you’ll look half as good as we do. Do it now and stop feeling so bad about yourselves.’ in a subtle manner of course.

The need to be beautiful is no doubt the root of most commercials and ads that you can see everywhere nowadays, as before. The constant attempt to cater to and innovate on questions of how to be beautiful and how to stay beautiful keep fueling many of today’s businesses. And by the way, this is not to say there’s anything wrong with that but merely a point out that this is reality and this is what’s going on for better or worse. There are definitely many advantages to this type of system. For one, everything that you need and even want tends to become a lot more accessible.

These are all true and affirmed statements. No one can deny any of this at this point and no one cares to. Everyone knows that this is the world we live in, even children. And we like it. We like to look beautiful or at least presentable to society as I’d like to put it. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that. The only advise that I’d like to point out is that, while it is a universally accepted truth that selling external beauty is a way of living, being beautiful inside is it’s counterpart that should not be left behind. That is certainly something that cannot be sold. It’s something that is learned and acquired and depends on you and how you do it. It depends on the people you surround yourself with too.

I am still optimistic that after all this, visible beauty on the inside still trumps visible beauty on the outside. I add visible to both of them because we can see beauty whether it’s the person’s character and kindness that attracts us to them or how stunning they look on the outside that simply draws us in. That’s the whole point of us noticing them in the first place, because they’re all visible, whatever form they’re in. You can say that visible beauty on the inside, while more important, also needs more work to gain and maintain. That’s a whole ‘nother topic, one for the books. As for visible beauty on the outside, that’s something we can work on right now with the help of those pesky infomercials and television ads.

Tips on Staying Beautiful

Jill Brennan
Categories: Beauty

At this point, it’s become more of a stereotype for people to say, ‘you’re beautiful on the inside.’ Frankly, that could just be one other way of saying you’re not, or not really. To avoid these awkward conversations, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Eat healthy. We always hear other people talking about eating right and staying healthy so that we get to look as well as feel good about ourselves. They’re apparently right. It does pay off to eat healthy. According to Dr. Roizen who’s been on Oprah, these are the 3 items that should be in your checklist in order to stay beautiful and he swears by them.

1. Get enough DHA from fish oil and walnuts. These oils are excellent for your skin.

2. Don’t eat too much saturated fat or red meat.

3. Protect your skin during the day and feed it at night. Use SPF lotion during the day and an inexpensive beauty cream at night.

Laugh and Smile. They say laughter is the best medicine. Well, it turns out laughter is also a beauty Remember to smile. A smile is like a welcome-sign for people to feel attracted to your beauty, and will brighten up your entire face. Eyes are also a very noticeable to others. People tend to notice a warm beautiful smile & beautiful eyes.

Sleep. Beauty sleep is not a myth and sleep does lessen the severity of wrinkles in the face and neck, at least temporarily. Part of this is due to a decline in body temperature and a shift in body position. The body cools in anticipation of bed time (about half a degree) and to do so, the circulatory system increases blood flow to the skin. This is why the cheeks often flush at night.

Share Beauty Tips Among Friends. Having a friend that you can share your beauty tips & beauty shopping with will be a beauty booster. And besides, this will help you get more input on which product works best on what part of the body. Whatever you choose, make sure that you get feedback from friends who know a lot about these things or beauty experts in your area (probably from the beauty parlor would be my 2nd best bet) that it’s the best or one of the best. Now, this is not to say that you gotta rely on them. You would definitely have your own style and your own preferences and opinions as to what looks best on you. So keep at it but just try to get a little more input for confirmation is what I would suggest.

Products don’t hurt but the key is knowing which ones to choose. Nowadays, you can see beauty products being sold for more and more body parts. Always try to keep in mind that sometimes, and more often than not, less is more. Be beautiful without overdoing it.

What is Inner Beauty?

Robert Micheal Green
Categories: Beauty

Inner beauty is the most important feature in our human being. All of our actions in a day draw from that inner beauty or soul, if you wish. Have you ever wondered what makes you act the way you do or who you are, inside? Are we are just a collection of cells that happened to come together by chance or is there some grand design someone we can’t see or touch that brought us all together? Inner beauty shows itself in many ways perhaps by helping an elderly neighbor with their yard work or volunteering your time to your community.

Love is an expression of inner beauty. Does one give love on a daily basis? Does one feel Loved on a daily basis? Hope is a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one’s life and the lives of others. This can only come from a place of inner beauty. Do you feel compassion toward another human being when you see them in pain or suffering? Compassion comes from inner beauty, at times you can feel it tug at your heart, sometimes you can ignore it but deep down it’s always there.

What about outer beauty? Can outer beauty, say a beautiful waterfall, a majestic mountain or the brilliant stars in heaven, be enjoyed without inner beauty? I think not. A person can be attracted by outward beauty only to find on closer examination that it is ugly on the inside. A beautiful looking person can be filled with hatred or with love. But how do we know unless we look on the inside? We often judge people when we first meet them by the way they look. It has always been said; you cannot judge a book by its cover. So look inside when you first meet people and look for that inner beauty, in the long run it is far more important than outward beauty.

What can physical things in life do for the soul? The answer is “nothing”. You need to fill the soul otherwise it starves. Is your inner soul starving? You can satisfy the hunger with acts of kindness and love, there is plenty in this world to fill the soul. Use it every day and I believe you will be full in no time. After 9/11 I felt love and compassion for all of my fellow Americans, I remember sitting at a toll booth waiting for the person in front of me, fumbling to find the correct change. Any other time I would have been a bit angry at the wait but this time I would have waited all day without anger. I believe it was because we were all one during that time, one country, one people. Why can’t it be like that every day as we work, play and live?

I don’t have all the answers nor do I proclaim to be fault free but I do know the feelings of my own heart. I am sure that each one of us has thought some of these very things at some point in our lives. I don’t want to be on my death bed saying, “I did it all wrong”; there are no do overs. Your inner beauty can flourish and grow, no one can quell it and no one can take it away.

I don’t know about you but I am going to look for the inner beauty in all that I meet.

Natural Beauty Secrets For Everyday Women

Melanie Bell
Categories: Beauty

What woman wouldn’t want to have access to natural beauty secrets? Too many women look around and see those gorgeous models in magazines and on billboards with their flawless complexions, and next thing you know they’re undergoing risky plastic surgery on their faces and bodies to attain “natural” beauty.

The problem with this approach is twofold and should be obvious. First of all, natural beauty cannot be artificially produced. Even if a surgical procedure is performed safely, causing no harm to the patient (not always the case), there is no guarantee the patient will be happy with the results. Too often an unnatural, alien face will be looking back at you in the mirror.

Are natural beauty secrets to be found in the unrealistic expectations set forth by the mass media and marketing departments of profit-driven businesses? Hardly. The psychological effects of this artificial, risky, and expensive approach to “obtaining” an unrealistic standard of beauty can be damaging to not only the patient but to her loved ones as well.

Certainly some women are blessed with great natural beauty. But have you ever seen these “beauties” without their make-up? How about a close up on a high definition TV when every unsightly blemish and wrinkle is revealed? Digitally airbrushed images used in magazine ads and on websites have a way of making anyone’s complexion flawless and our expectations completely unrealistic.

So what are the natural beauty secrets women desire to know? There is no magic potion that produces natural beauty. But there are many things a woman can do on a daily basis to make herself look and feel more beautiful. On a general level, get yourself healthy and fit, mentally and physically. These are the fundamentals. Do that and you are well on your way to discovering the most beautiful you.

Eat right, exercise, drinks lots of water, get plenty of rest, eliminate or at least reduce the stress in your life, spend time doing things you love, love yourself, imperfections and all (we are all flawed, no exceptions), look for the good in others. Be generous with who you are: learn to smile. A smile makes others feel good, giving them a glimpse of your inner beauty.

Inner beauty is the greatest of all the natural beauty secrets. Develop your inner person and you natural beauty will have a foundation from which to grow and blossom. Then fix the outside, on a daily basis. Your hair can be a tremendous asset to your external appearance. Spend time with your skin, renewing it and reinvigorating it naturally. It is the largest and most visible organ of your body. There are lots of all natural skin care ideas for better skin available.

There really is no mystery to beauty. Improve your health of mind and body. Develop your inner person. Seek out natural options for attaining beautiful hair and skin to look your best. Do these things and those natural beauty secrets will no longer remain a mystery to you.

Feeling Beautiful?

Kylie Welsh
Categories: Beauty

For those looking for some great new reading, there is a young Brisbane woman, Sophee McPhee, who has just launched a magazine called QCG Magazine (Queensland Calander Girls).

The magazine is refreshingly distinctive, targeting a more mature audience and focusing on celebrating real women. Based on the inspirational and heart-warming box office hit, Calendar Girls (starring Helen Mirren & Julie Walters), QCG Magazine was developed to connect, inspire and celebrate all women. Their philosophy is, “skin – not plastic”, and the pages are filled with real stories from real women.

Whilst reading the magazine I was consistently reminded that age really is a mindset, so is confidence and beauty. Inner beauty and confidence will carry a woman through her whole life. It will allow a woman’s life to continuously unfold into an exciting adventure, propelled by her life experience and wisdom. It is a woman’s mindset that masters a meaningful life, not her outer beauty.

Our society as a whole tends to be obsessed with all things youthful – this information is not new. Women wear the brunt of this bias more than men though. Does no longer looking youthful mean women can’t be beautiful? How sad if this is what we allow ourselves to believe.

Annie Infinite from The Zen Bull recently submitted this article about women and beauty. I’m happy to see women like Julie Carrington and Sophee McPhee really working hard to shift these biases.

“As women grow older there is a strange phenomenon that happens to them. Julie Carrington of The Jewellery Gallery says that it is like a ‘cloak of invisibility’ is thrown over them. Women start to feel invisible because they no longer get the looks they used to when walking down the street.

“Women lose their confidence in their beauty and begin to feel less beautiful. As women age they look into the mirror and see only the parts of themselves that they don’t like.”

Feeling beautiful at any age has become the focus for new workshops held regularly by Julie and her partner Lea Sanson. They welcome women who want to reclaim that lost feeling of beauty.

There are few things more alluring than a woman who is sexy, bold and full of confidence. She feels good and that confidence shows. Julie says,”Woman ARE beautiful at any age and we want them to feel that beauty each and every day. We want women of any age to step out of the house each day and boldly strut their stuff.”

Using confidence building strategies, a mirror and beautiful jewelry adornment, Julie and Lea help women transform their perception about their age and most importantly their beauty.

“When a woman is dressed in something that makes her feel amazing and then we add an adornment to the outfit, she transforms right before her own eyes in the mirror. It is all about seeing the whole woman, the whole picture – rather than focusing on the bits we don’t like. Suddenly women can come alive. They stand with their heads high and get a little strut into their walk and you can see that they’re feeling bolder and more beautiful in just a couple of hours.”

Julie and Lea have a few tips for women who want to start feeling beautiful right now:
o Dress the part. Pick clothes that flatter your figure and make you feel like the bold, beautiful woman you are. Try not to squeeze into clothes that no longer fit or are unflattering, even though perhaps in fashion.
o Go for glamour. Purchase a few staples for the season and dress them up differently depending on your mood or the occasion.
o Adorn yourself. Find amazing jewellery to compliment the outfit you have chosen. It only takes one amazing piece to draw the eye where you want it and you will find yourself being complimented all day long. What a wonderful way of downplaying those places you are not so proud of.

This is the key to feeling and looking amazing explains Julie – accentuating the positive and downplaying the negative. “Seeing yourself as a whole picture when you look at yourself in the mirror is a big part of feeling beautiful. How often do we look in the mirror and only see the parts we don’t like? “

Seeing the whole person, the full effect will allow you to get out there and let the world know that you have the leading role in your life.

“Strutting your stuff is really important. When you walk into a room looking confident, you’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll begin to feel sassier and more confident than ever before.”

Wallflower anyone? I don’t think so…

‘Women Feeling Beautiful at any Age’ Workshops are held regularly in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast at The Jewellery Gallery. For more information on the next workshop please email Julie or Lea on admin@thejewellrygallery.com
